 I
started into painting at around age 11. Simple
watercolour pencils which I would paint off of
with a brush. Then at age 13, I jumped into oil
paint. I loved and despised oil. It got on
absolutely everything I owned; clothing, bedding,
floor, walls, and stunk up my narrow room with
the rich odour of curing and linseed oil; but I
created many little masterpieces of my own and
would pretend I was Tom Thompson painting the
wild onto masonite board. My Father & I would
go ever summer to the absolutely beautiful
Algonquin park region to camp, paddle and paint.
One of my favorite paintings, from such a trip,
got chosen out of thousands to be displayed in a
adult juried show in the Tom Thompson Memorial
Art Gallery. For me, this was a huge deal, at
age14 to be publicly displayed as an artist. I
was so happy.
When my depression
turned its ugly head, my paintings followed. They
tended to be situated around my experiences and
struggles, but most importantly my cacophony of
lucid dreams. Everything turned from
impressionistic to ambiguous abstract to surreal.
I took a leave from
large scale painting while I made the move to
British Columbia, with my best friend and
partner, Matthew.
But after several
moves through uncomfortable but affordable
apartments, we found a place we could actually
relax in, and I got back into painting.
"Faerypool" (displayed to the right)
was one of the first few paintings I did, whilst
living in the sun and shadow of Cypress Mountain.
Followed by Roots and Wings, Water Lily and Fire
Soul.
"West Wood"
was inspired by a moonlit night I spent up on
Cypress Mountain. The calmness enveloped me and
allowed me to reach inward. Strive toward the
path to oneness. Start a new journey to create a
new journey.
My latest creations
come from night dreams and day visions that have
surrounded me while going through some difficult
emotional times and curious spiritual
renunciation. Most recently I have had lucid
dreams from the East. Images of ancient towering
stone structures enveloped by strangling figs,
Buddhas warm smiles, elemental elephants and
simple oneness. I researched the images that were
carved into my cortex, via the internet, and
found my exact vision really existed in the
countries of the Khmers and Siamese (Cambodia and
Thailand). I put the images in paint and started
planning a trip to quench the thirst that
continues to draw me to the East.
Enjoy.
